With any kind of chance in the senses, in this case hearing, the brain often has to adjust to this change.  With hearing loss, the brain loses part of its density in the auditory section. The study examined the relationship between hearing and brain function by first, measuring the brains response to complex sentences. Next, the brain volume in the auditory cortex was measured. People ages 60-77 that experienced some form of age related hearing loss were also tested to show if people with hearing loss had less of a response to the complex sentences. The results showed that those with hearing loss had less brain activity when listening to the complex sentences.

Starkey Hearing Foundation recently was aired on the August 15th episode of Giuliana&Bill on the STYLE Network. Bill sat down to speak with executive director Steven Sawalich about the hearing mission that was happening in Haiti. Starkey Hearing Foundation will be aired on the show on August 22nd when Bill Rancic will be traveling to Haiti to help. Bill and others who were on the Haiti mission, fitted hundreds of children with Starkey hearing aids. Children and adults got the chance to finally hear someone say “I love you” to them, some for the first time.

Starkey Hearing Foundation believes that: “Alone we can’t do much. But, together we can change the world.”  The program relies on the education of people all around the world about how to protect their hearing or get help for their hearing loss.

The Medicare Hearing Health Care Enhancement Act of 2011 or H.R. 2140 will allow patients to go straight to their audiologist without the need to go to the physician for a referral first. Currently, federal and congressional employees have direct access to an audiologist. Hopefully, this bill will cut out the middle man and allow patients to directly get to the doctor they need.  The bill will need help from audiologist to promote it to gain awareness by lawmakers. The more this information is shared and the louder the people are about their desire for this bill to be passed the better chance it will have.

HearFlorida, South Florida’s premier hearing care provider with locations throughout Broward, Palm Beach and Dade County, is giving four deserving hearing impaired individuals the opportunity to win a free pair of digital hearing aid devices, valued at $6,990 a pair.

For over 75 years, May has been the month dedicated to awareness surrounding different forms of communication impairments from hearing, speech, and language difficulties. It is estimated that around 36 million American citizens suffer with a hearing impairment, yet only 20 percent seek medical attention to help dramatically improve their hearing, leaving millions of people struggling. To help raise awareness of the importance of proper hearing care, HearFlorida is hoping this hearing aid contest will allow more people who are suffer with hearing loss to receive quality hearing care to help improve their quality of life.

“I wanted to give South Florida residents an opportunity to get a pair of premium hearing aid devices and change their lives,” explains Dr. Adam Locker, Au.D, President of HearFlorida Audiology Group. “It can be a life changing experience and it is our way of giving back to our community, and raising hearing loss awareness.”

Between May 11th and May 25th, HearFlorida will be accepting online submissions for its Hearing Aid Community Give Back contest that will award FOUR pairs of premium digital hearing aid devices, including hearing care consultation and follow-up care. The HearFlorida Hearing Aid Community Give Back contest is open to all hearing impaired residents of Broward, Dade and Palm Beach County, 18 years and older. The FOUR (4) winners will be announced on and showcased on the HearFlorida website and on HearFlorida’s Facebook page.

Three winners will be selected by submission of “How hearing aids will enhance my (or loved one’s) life” and one person at random from our Facebook fan page. Nominations can be submitted in the form of an essay or a video through May 25, 2011, either by email or on the HearFlorida website. The winner will be announced on May 26, 2011 and showcased on the HearFlorida website and on the HearFlorida Facebook page.
